Why a crate bed is a fit problem first
People search for a calming bed for a crate because the dog is nervous in there, or because it will not settle. A crate floor is a fixed rectangle with walls on every side. A bed that is a little too big bunches up, rides up the walls or leaves less room to stand. A bed that is too small leaves part of the floor bare. Most calming-bed advice assumes an open room; a crate has no slack.
VCA Animal Hospitals says a crate should have enough floor space for a dog to lie down and stretch comfortably, and be tall enough to stand without hitting its head (VCA, crate training overview). Every inch of bed thickness comes out of that height, so the bed has to fit both ways: across the floor and under the roof.
Measure your crate floor first
Crates are sold by nominal length, and the length on the box is not the inside floor you have to fit a bed into. Floor width is not standard either: double-door, plastic and furniture-style crates differ, and the VCA page we cite gives no measurements. So we do not publish a crate chart or pair dog weights with crate sizes. Instead:
- Measure the inside floor. Take length and width of the floor you can actually lay a bed on, not the outside frame.
- Measure the height. Measure inside at the lowest point of the roof, because the bed's thickness comes out of it.
- Check the dog. VCA's test is that the dog can lie down, stretch and stand without hitting its head, with the bed in place.
Our fit rule, shown
For a rectangular bed, the bed fits if its length is no more than the floor length and its width is no more than the floor width. For a donut, the footprint is a square with the diameter as its side, so the diameter must be no more than the floor width, the shorter side. Then comes the part most roundups skip: the usable sleeping surface of a donut is smaller than its diameter. Our size data holds two published inner sizes, and the larger outer-minus-inner gap is 7 inches, so we subtract that from the diameter. It rests on two data points from one brand and is not a manufacturer figure.

Donuts of 36 inches and up need a very large floor, so we left them out. The Bedsure Orthopedic size names and dimensions do not map cleanly (five dimension sets against four names on the retailer page), so match by the numbers.
Two worked examples
These are hypothetical floors chosen to show the arithmetic, not real crate models. Replace them with your own measurements.
- If your crate floor measures 24 x 18 inches, the Bedsure Orthopedic Small (24 x 18) matches it exactly, so check how it sits at the walls. Of the donuts, only the Best Friends by Sheri 17 inch is narrow enough, and its rating is 7 lb with about 10 inches of sleeping surface. The 20 inch Bedsure donut is wider than the floor.
- If your crate floor measures 36 x 23 inches, the Bedsure Orthopedic Medium (28 x 23) fits. The Large (35 x 25) is 2 inches too wide. Donuts up to 23 inches fit the width, but the largest leaves about 16 or 17 inches of sleeping surface. Those 23 inch donuts carry published ratings of 20 to 25 lb in our data, so check the rating against your own dog's weight as well as the floor.
One trap to watch: a donut can clear the crate floor and still be rated for a smaller dog than the one in the crate.
Height: the rim takes headroom
Overall bed height in our data runs from 6 to 6.5 inches for the Bedsure Orthopedic (including the bolster) to 6 to 10 inches for the Bedsure Calming Donut and 10 inches for the FurHaven 36 inch (the 30 inch height comes from a listing for a sibling FurHaven line, so treat it as unconfirmed). Subtract the bed height from the inside height of your crate. What is left must still let the dog stand without touching the roof, which is VCA's test. A dog that has to duck is in a bed that is too thick for that crate. Overall height is not the same as the height of the rim itself, and no brand in our data publishes a rim height.
Safety in a crate
- Chewing. Our dataset flags strong chewers as a poor match for the Best Friends by Sheri and FurHaven donuts, and a retailer cautions the same for FurHaven. A dog that chews bedding can swallow fill or fabric. Remove the bed when you cannot supervise a chewer, and see our note on chew-proof and waterproof beds.
- Heat. Plush faux fur and thick fill hold warmth, and a crate has less airflow than a room. Our dataset lists dogs that overheat as a poor match for the Best Friends by Sheri bed. If your dog pants in the crate, take the plush bed out. This is our reasoning from how the beds are built, not a tested result.
- Time. VCA says extended confinement is not healthy and that dogs need exercise, training and social contact. A comfortable bed does not make long hours acceptable.
- Puppies. VCA says a puppy may need to start with a smaller crate and move up as it grows. Whatever the size, a thin, washable bed is easier to manage than a thick one.
- Slipping. Only the two Bedsure beds have a non-slip bottom stated on pages we trust in our notes (Bedfolks has an unverified single-reseller claim). A bed that slides on a plastic crate tray shifts under the dog.
When not to use a donut in a crate
- The crate floor is narrower than the donut diameter, so the rim folds up the wall.
- The sleeping surface (diameter minus 7) is shorter than your dog curled up. Our size calculator does this sum for you.
- Your dog sleeps stretched out. A crate rarely leaves room for a rim, and a rectangular bolster bed gives more length than a donut, though its bolster still takes some floor.
- Your dog chews, or runs warm.
- Your dog needs joint support. Our data lists dogs needing joint support as a poor match for the Bedsure Calming Donut; see beds for senior dogs.
Rectangular bolster bed or donut?
Rectangular bolster bed (Bedsure Orthopedic): most crates, sprawlers, seniors, chewers you supervise. Donut: a larger crate with a floor wider than the donut, for a small to medium dog that curls tightly and does not chew. When in doubt, start with the rectangular option.
Does a bed make a crate calming?
Not by itself. VCA's advice for crate training centers on building a positive association gradually, not on equipment. For a dog that panics when alone, a different cause may be involved; read our separation anxiety page and talk to your vet. For a new bed that the dog ignores, try these steps.
