Small sizes across our five beds
These are the smallest sizes of the beds in our dataset, up to 28 inches on the longest side, which includes the Small and Medium rectangles of Bedsure Orthopedic. Where the weight limit says "not published", the maker or retailer did not tell us.

Only three small sizes have a published weight limit: the Best Friends by Sheri 17 inch (up to 7 lb), the Best Friends by Sheri 23 inch (up to 25 lb), and the FurHaven 23 inch (up to 20 lb). The Best Friends by Sheri 23 inch figure comes from another retailer's listing, and the brand page weight is not confirmed. A 17 inch bed with a 7 lb limit suits a toy breed or a small puppy, not a dog that will grow.
Is a small dog too small for a calming bed?
A small dog needs the same thing a large one does: enough room inside the rim. A bed that is far too big can leave a tiny dog sitting in the middle of a wide flat area, with no side to lean on. We have no data on how much oversize is too much, and we did not test it. A reasonable approach is to choose the smallest size whose weight limit covers your dog and whose inner space fits the length of your dog when curled.
Our calming dog bed size calculator does the arithmetic. Enter your dog's weight and measurement and it lists the smallest size per brand that clears both checks. It is a rule of thumb, and our guide explains the rule in full.
Puppies: buy for now or for adult size?
A puppy grows quickly and most bed sizes are rated by weight, so a puppy may outgrow a small donut within months. The practical choices are:
- Buy small now and replace it. This works for toy breeds that stay under the 7 lb or 20 lb limits, and if you expect to replace the bed.
- Buy for the adult size. Look up the breed in the breed-by-breed bed size chart, find the adult weight range and pick a size that covers it. A small puppy will look lost in it for a while.
Mixed-breed puppies are harder. If you do not know the adult weight, ask your vet for an estimate at the first visits, and avoid buying a big bed on a guess.
Small dogs with anxiety
Small dogs that are nervous or clingy often like a bed they can curl into, and the right-sized rim matters more for them than for a big dog. Pick the smallest size that covers your dog's weight and curled width. A bed is a comfort, not a treatment; for panic when you leave, see our separation anxiety bed guide, and talk to your vet if the behavior is new.
Chewing and puppies
Puppies chew. A donut bed is full of fiber that a chewing puppy can pull out and swallow, which can cause a blockage. Our dataset flags strong chewers as a poor match for the Best Friends by Sheri bed, and FurHaven's retailer pages caution against destructive chewers. If your puppy chews fabric, supervise the bed, or hold off on it until the chewing phase has passed and use a bed that is hard to damage in the meantime. If a puppy has swallowed fill, call your vet.
For what the labels "chew-proof" and "waterproof" do and do not tell you, see our chew-proof and waterproof bed guide.
Crates
A round donut rarely fits a crate well, because the crate is rectangular and the rim wastes the corners. If your small dog or puppy sleeps in a crate, measure the floor of the crate and choose a flat or low-sided mat. We do not feature a crate-specific bed yet. The FurHaven crate bed and MidWest crate mats in our dataset are candidates that we have not verified, so we do not link them. Also check whether your puppy tries to eat the bed in the crate, as unsupervised chewing is the main risk there.
If your small dog likes to hide or burrow, we looked at what is known about cave and hooded calming beds; none of the beds in our data is hooded.
Washing small beds
Small beds are easier to wash. According to retailer text, the Best Friends by Sheri 17 inch and 23 inch beds are entirely machine washable, while the larger sizes have a zip-off shell. The FurHaven 23 inch is a one-piece bed with no removable cover, and the brand says the bed is completely machine washable. Always follow the care label, and see our washing and care guide for fluffing tips. For the full list of diameters across brands, open the calming dog bed size guide.
