How to read the table
Every row gives a typical adult weight range, then the smallest donut diameter from our four round beds whose published weight limit covers the heaviest weight in that range. The four brand columns show each brand's smallest qualifying size, or "none" where that brand has no size with a published limit high enough.
Our rule, stated plainly
Minimum donut diameter = the smallest size from any of our four donut beds that has a published weight limit at or above the top of the breed's weight range. Weight is the only input, because we have no sourced body-length figures for breeds. Sizes with no published weight limit are not counted. The rule is deliberately about the weight ceiling. It does not know how long your individual dog is, how it sleeps, or whether a very small dog is lost in a large bed.
After you find your breed, run your own dog's numbers through the calming bed size calculator. The table counts a size as covering a breed when the published limit is at or above the top weight; the calculator treats a dog above 90 percent of the limit as "at the limit, size up", so a dog heavier than 90 lb is steered to 45 inches even where this table says 36 (this table compares a breed's top weight with 100 percent of the limit, the calculator with 90 percent; a dog of exactly 90 lb still fits the 36 inch). Individual dogs differ a lot from breed averages, and a dog that sleeps stretched out needs more room than the weight rule suggests.

Notes on gaps: Bedsure's published weight limits cover only its 36 inch size (100 lb). Its 20, 23, 27 and 30 inch sizes publish none, so very small breeds show a larger Bedsure size than they would need. Bedfolks has only its 36 inch size with a limit, from a single reseller listing. These are the reasons small breeds show different smallest sizes across the columns.
Breeds over 100 lb
Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernard and Newfoundland sit at or above the largest published donut rating (150 lb on the Best Friends by Sheri 45 inch) for the top of their range. The Great Dane row shows only minimum weights because the source gives nothing else. A breed average hides a wide spread: a smaller female may fit a 45 inch, while a big male will not. Weigh your dog. See our page on large-dog sizes from 70 to 150 lb for the options, including the rectangular alternative.
Breeds under 25 lb
For toy and small breeds, the Best Friends by Sheri 17 inch (up to 7 lb) and 23 inch (up to 25 lb), and the FurHaven 23 inch (up to 20 lb), are the small sizes with a published limit. See sizes for small dogs and puppies for more, including chewing and crate notes.
Anxious dogs and breed size
Breed does not predict anxiety, but a dog prone to anxiety needs a bed it actually fits. Size by weight first, then check the curled width in the calming dog bed size guide. For dogs that panic when alone, see the separation anxiety bed guide.
Mixed breeds and breeds not listed
Pit bull type dogs are not a single breed. The closest listed entry is the American Staffordshire Terrier, but your dog may weigh more or less. For mixed breeds, forget the breed and use the actual weight. Doodles and shepherd mixes in particular vary far beyond one breed's range.
Where the weights come from
Breed weights are taken from the English Wikipedia article for each breed (for example, the Labrador Retriever article), which summarize kennel club breed standards. They were read on 2026-10-15. We first tried the American Kennel Club breed pages, but the pages we could read did not show weight text, so we did not use AKC figures and cannot claim them. A breed was left out when we could not read a clear weight figure, which is why Mastiff, Maltese and Bichon Frise are not listed. For the Great Dane, the only weight text is the UK and New Zealand Kennel Club minimums of 120 lb for males and 100 lb for females.
