Here is every round size of 36 inches or more across the four donut beds in our dataset. Where a weight limit is published, it is a brand or retailer claim, not something we tested.

Filtering for beds with a weight limit that actually covers a large dog, only five sizes remain: the Best Friends by Sheri 36 inch (up to 100 lb) and 45 inch (up to 150 lb), the FurHaven 36 inch (up to 75 lb) and 45 inch (up to 90 lb), and the Bedsure 36 inch (up to 100 lb). The Bedfolks 36 inch also claims 100 lb, but from a single reseller listing. We would not rely on it alone.

Beds that do not publish a limit

Three of the sizes above have no weight rating we could find: the Best Friends by Sheri 54 inch, the Bedfolks 45 inch, and every Bedsure Orthopedic size. A bed without a published limit is not necessarily weak. It just means the maker has not told you, so there is nothing to check your dog against. We do not recommend a size on the strength of its diameter alone.

The Best Friends by Sheri 54 inch deserves a note. A 54 x 54 listing exists at another retailer, but we could not read a weight rating, and we could not find the size on the brand site. A claim of 210 lb that appeared on an older version of this site was unverified, so we removed it.

Is there a donut for a dog over 150 lb?

Not one we can verify. The highest weight rating we found for any round calming bed is 150 lb, on the Best Friends by Sheri 45 inch. For a Great Dane, Mastiff, St. Bernard or Newfoundland at the top of the weight range, no donut in our dataset has a published rating that covers them. Another brand, Majestic Pet, lists an oval bagel bed at 52 x 36 inches rated to 110 lb (listed on the brand site). It is not on our recommended list, but it shows how few options exist, and it still stops short of 150 lb.

If you have a giant dog that likes to curl, ask the brand directly about the 54 inch listing (seen at another retailer, not on the brand site, with no weight rating) before buying, and read the return policy. If your dog sleeps stretched out, skip the question and go rectangular.

Anti-anxiety dog bed for large dogs: what to expect

If your big dog is anxious, an anti-anxiety dog bed is one small piece of the picture. A deep rim to lean on can help some anxious dogs settle, but that is a comfort feature, not a treatment, and we did not test any dog. Pick the size by weight and sleeping style first, because a rim that is too small gives an anxious dog nothing to lean on. The rectangular option: Bedsure Orthopedic

Large dogs that sprawl, or that have stiff joints, are often better on a flat bed with a low bolster. Bedsure Orthopedic is the one rectangular bed we feature. It uses egg-crate foam, has a non-skid bottom per a major US pet retailer, and comes in five dimension sets:

Two honest limits. First, Bedsure publishes no dog weight limit that we could find, so the table tells you how long the bed is, not how heavy a dog it carries. Second, the pet retailer's page lists five sets of dimensions against four size names, so the mapping from name to dimensions is uncertain. Match by the length and width you see on the listing, not by the word "Large".

How to measure a large dog

1. Wait until your dog is asleep or settled in the usual spot. Measure nose to base of tail in that position.
2. Weigh your dog. For a dog too big for a home scale, ask your vet, who will usually weigh a dog at a visit.
3. Put the length and weight in our dog bed size calculator.
4. If your dog is still under two years old, a young large breed can keep growing. Do not buy for the dog you have today if it is near the top of a size band.

When a donut is the wrong bed for a large dog

• Heat. Plush faux fur and thick fiber fill hold warmth. Our dataset lists dogs that overheat as a poor match for the Best Friends by Sheri bed. If your large dog pants on a normal-weight blanket, a thick donut is likely too warm.
• Joints. A fiber-filled rim compresses under weight. A heavy dog with stiff hips may sink toward the floor. This is where an orthopedic bed is the better tool; see donut vs orthopedic.
• Sprawlers. A raised rim is for leaning against. A dog that stretches out loses most of its benefit.
• Chewers. Our dataset flags strong chewers as a poor match for the Best Friends by Sheri and FurHaven donuts. Large dogs can destroy fill quickly.

Talk to your vet if your dog's restlessness or reluctance to lie down is new. A bed does not fix pain or a medical cause of anxiety.

Washing a 36 or 45 inch donut

Calming beds for large senior dogs
